The simulated multiple-injury and fatality accident was intended to show students the consequences of driving under the influence as well as distracted driving. The drill included Toppenish fire and police, Yakima County Sheriff, Washington State Patrol, AMR ambulance crews, Phoenix Protective Corp. security and even a Northwest MedStar helicopter. ]]> “With mass shootings fresh in the public consciousness following December’s tandem attacks at The Clackamas Town Center near Portland and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., a Clark County school district is taking measures to make sure something similar doesn’t happen there.

The Ridgefield School District has hired a company to provide security, becoming the first one in Clark County to employ a private firm’s armed guards. A contract with Phoenix Protective Corp., a Spokane-based security consulting company, calls for at least two of its employees to patrol the district’s three campuses for the remainder of the school year…”

Many school districts are tightening sign-in procedures and making sure school doors are locked.

And the small Southwest Washington district of Ridgefield is going further.

Spokesman Eric Jacobson says Ridgefield is spending about $40,000 to hire armed guards from a private security firm.

“This contract that we’re signing with Phoenix Protective Corporation isn’t just for the armed security that they’ll be providing. We’re also consulting with them for them to review our existing school security procedures and protocols.”  Nearby urban districts, like Vancouver, Evergreen…”
